Winston Wade and Zack Blanton have been fishing together as long as they can remember. Saturday, in what proved to be some of the toughest conditions possible, they added one more day to remember as they won the Ohio SAF High School State Bass Fishing Championship for the second time with an impressive 5 five limit that weighed in at 9lbs 6oz.

What was impressive about the catch is that it came on a day when everyone else struggled to catch a single fish as the mighty Ohio River reared its head after three days of heavy rains and storms.

“Finding a little green water and staying out of the current was the key to catching a limit,” stated Wade who is heading into his senior year at Gallia Academy High School.

“We used a combination of spinner baits and tube jigs to catch all of our fish,” added Blanton who recently graduated from Gallia Academy. “We are thrilled to be moving on to Kentucky Lake and another chance at the regional championship,” cited the smiling pair.

An equally impressive effort was turned in by the runner-up team of Dalton Rand and Bradley Bumgardner from Fayette County who also had a limit of fish that weighed in at 7 lbs 11oz. to finish second. Rounding out the field in third place was another team from Gallia Academy consisting of Billy Powers and Sydney Rose who had two fish that weighed in at 2lbs 6 oz.

High currents and debris plagued the dual state field from Ohio and West Virginia who converged on the scenic town of Gallipolis for the third year. “Boat captains for all the teams are to be commended for their efforts in ensuring the safety of the anglers,” commented TBF Youth Director Mark Gintert. “The key to this High School Program across the country is coaches and boat captains and today they proved to be our absolute best resource in keeping our anglers safe,” added Gintert.

The SAF Championship Series continues next weekend with the Sam Rayburn Open in East Texas. This is an open event for all SAF anglers from across the country to participate in. Registration for that event will close Friday afternoon June 21st.

PONCA CITY, Okla. (June 10, 2013) – The Bass Federation (TBF), in partnership with FLW, is excited to host the 2013 Student Angler Federation (SAF) Wisconsin High School Fishing State Championship on Saturday, July 27. The event will be held on the Madison Chain of Lakes.

The state championship is a two person team event for students in grades 9-12. Registration for anglers and their “coach,” who will provide the boat they compete in, is online at HighSchoolFishing.org. Check-in is at 6am CST on Saturday, July 27 at the Lake Farm Shelter #2 with rules briefing and tournament to follow. We highly encourage all teams to pre-register online in advance to avoid late registration fees.

Students and parents can go to HighSchoolFishing.org for details on the Student Angler Federation (SAF) and to sign up. Cost is only $25/ year and includes full TBF and FLW benefits, including FLW Magazine e-Edition and insurance coverage for students and their club. The state champions from each state will advance to an FLW/TBF High School Fishing Conference Championship. Conference winners will advance to the FLW/TBF High School Fishing National Championship held in conjunction with the FLW College Fishing National Championship in the spring of 2014. All SAF members nationwide and all state championship participants automatically qualify for the largest event in high school fishing, the 2013 High School Fishing World Finals. At these events students will compete for thousands in college scholarships and prizes. Each team qualifying for a conference and/or national championship will receive a travel allowance to help offset expenses. The National Champions will also receive a $5,000 scholarship each to use at the university of their choice.

If you’re not a current 2013 SAF member, there’s a one-time $25/per angler fee. This includes full TBF & FLW membership benefits for the year, as well as, free entry to ALL SAF sanctioned events!

Another unique feature of an SAF sanctioned event is the “angler testing” component. Anglers can take a free online test at HighSchoolFishing.org about boater safety, conservation and angler ethics, which makes them eligible for contingency awards at their state championship. “Angler testing and education is an industry first by TBF,” TBF National Youth Director, Mark Gintert, commented. “The Federation is driven by our desire to promote education through fishing and the testing component is designed to do exactly that. The Wisconsin Bass Federation offers these young anglers and their parents a home to participate in the sport of fishing locally and year round. Our partnership with FLW provides more benefits and opportunities for them to take advantage of too,” Gintert continued. “For only $25 per year these young anglers and their families have opportunities unlike anything the industry has ever seen.”

Event Details:

State Championship sign-up: PRE-REGISTER ONLINE at HighSchoolFishing.org. Boat numbers are determined by date registered. A $25 late registration fee applies to those registering at check-in. The best way is to pre-register online at highschoolfishing.org.

Mandatory Check-in: Saturday, July 27, 6am CST at Lake Farm Shelter #2. The rules briefing and tournament will follow. The Shelters are located at: 4330 Libby Road, Madison, WI.

As the teams registered, many talked about having good days of practice with 14-15 lbs bags of fish. On Saturday during practice, the sun disappeared and the rain set in and the bite changed. On Sunday, 5/19/2013, all the teams blasted off at safelight in search of a limit of 5 keepers. With an overcast sky, the anglers had a decent morning until around 11am when the steady rain set in again. As the anglers returned to the marina, the rain was still coming down. As the anglers headed to the holding tanks, the rain stopped and the sun popped out. When the scales opened, the anglers proved that the rain didn’t stop the show as many smallmouth and largemouth were weighed in. The team of Brandon Newberry and Hayden Justus of Honaker High School took 1st Place with 5 fish that weighed 13.1 lbs. The team of Richard Wellhouse and Jordan Mazza of Potomac Falls High School had 2nd Place with 5 fish that weighed 11.13 lbs and 3rd Place went to the team of Nathan Wood and John Smith of Patrick County HS with a 5 fish limit that weighed 10.11 lbs. Big bass of the tournament was caught by Nathan Wood and John Smith and was a 3.10 lb largemouth. For more pictures and standings, check out Virginia TBF Youth on facebook.

The lake is well suited for all styles of fishing. The water temp was still between 63-66 degree and there were quite a few bass that were still on beds. The 2013 Minnesota High School champions are Kaleb Seeger and Jake Saterbak of Osseo High School with a bag weight of 15.57, 2nd place went to Ryan Hooper and Isaac Johnson from Brainerd High School with the weight of 12.63 and 3rd place was Austin Anderly and Will Stalks of LeSueur-Henderson/ Brainerd High Schools with a weight of 12.62. We had 18 teams enter the tournament this year. It was a very diverse group with some fishing 6-8 events a year and to some it was their first tournament ever. The sun was out most of the day and then we had a little bit of rain during weigh ins. All in all it was very enjoyable experience for everyone. Awards and prizes were furnished by our generous sponsors at Cabela’s, Ranger Boats, Solar Bat eyewear, and Berkley.

Moses Lake had two teams representing the Moses Lake high school Chiefs, and teams as far away as Long View Washington, R.A. The lake temperature was in the mid to high sixties with little or no wind through out the day, and made for great fishing conditions.

All teams brought fish to the scale with, Moses Lake Chiefs team of Harris Turner and Dustin Caldwell managing to cull their way to the top of the group with a mixed bag of small mouth and large mouth to top the scale at 20.80 lbs for first place. Local lake knowledge was sure to have helped find the right fish to win. Second place went to Spokane’s University High School Titans team of Joe Choiniere and Nathan Portch who weighed in 19.38 lbs with a challenge for second from Mt Spokane High Wildcats Dakota Jones and Logan Meredith who placed third with 19.16 lbs.

PONCA CITY, Okla. (May 30, 2013) – The Bass Federation (TBF), in partnership with FLW, is excited to host the 2013 Student Angler Federation (SAF) Ontario High School Fishing State Championship on Saturday, July 13. The event will be held at Centennial Park in Orillia, Ontario.

The state championship is a two person team event for students in grades 9-12. Registration for anglers and their “coach,” who will provide the boat they compete in, is online at HighSchoolFishing.org. Check-in is at 6am EST on Saturday, July 13 at the Centennial Park launch ramp with rules briefing and tournament to follow. We highly encourage all teams to pre-register online in advance to avoid late registration fees.

“We are very excited to get our high school fishing program up and running,” Ontario TBF President, Rick Weatherill, said. “We have a lot of avid anglers in this country and this is a great chance to get these young anglers involved with our program.”

Students and parents can go to HighSchoolFishing.org for details on the Student Angler Federation (SAF) and to sign up. The Ontario Bass Federation offers these young anglers and their parents a home to participate in the sport of fishing locally and year round. Our partnership with FLW provides more benefits and opportunities for them to take advantage of too,” Gintert continued. “For only $25 per year these young anglers and their families have opportunities unlike anything the industry has ever seen.”
