Tie Breaker Separates Top Two Teams at KHSAA Region 3 Championship

Region 3 ChampionsThe competition at the KHSAA Region 3 championship was intense on Saturday as 92 teams began their quest to qualify for the KHSAA State Championship on Kentucky Lake.

When the final bag of Lake Cumberland Bass had been weighed, two teams remained on top. Tad Barton and Matthew Woods from South Laurel High School and Trey Hardwick and Bradley Dunagan from Wayne County High School finished in a dead heat with identical 16lb 8oz bags.

Region 3 Runner-upThe first criteria for a tie breaker in the KHSAA contest is the largest fish in the limit.  So, with their 4lb 9oz lunker the team of Barton and Woods carried off the Region 3 Championship.  The duo edged out Hardwick and Dunagan’s 3lb 9oz big bass by only a pound. Both teams carted off nice trophies and top honors.

Coming in third, was the Southwestern High School Team of Benjamin Hughes and Tyler Murphy who also had a limit of fish that weighed 14lbs 9oz. Claiming the number four spot was Mason Moore and Logan Estes with a limit weighing 14lbs 5oz. Rounding out the top five were Austin Williams and Jordan Cassidy from North Laurel High School with a limit weighing 13lbs 8oz.

The top 16 teams from each of the four KHSAA regions advanced to the 2016 KHSAA State Championship to be held at the Kentucky Dam Marina ramp on May 13-14.
